Ten Network Violates Gambling Advertising Regulations During Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix
Ten Network, the Australian commercial television network owned by Ten Network Holdings, recently faced scrutiny for breaching gambling advertising regulations during its coverage of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in March 2024.
Network 10’s First Breach Attributed to Human Error
Following an investigation by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), it was revealed that four gambling advertisements were aired during the first practice round of the Grand Prix, violating strict rules that prohibit such ads during sporting events between 5:00 AM and 8:30 PM. These restrictions also extend to the five-minute windows before and after the event.
This incident marked the first time Network Ten had violated gambling advertising regulations, with the network attributing the error to human oversight.
In response to ACMA’s findings, Network Ten has implemented new measures to prevent future breaches. The company has enhanced its planning procedures and introduced additional checks and balances to improve its ad scheduling process. ACMA has also requested the network to conduct a comprehensive review of its internal processes and enhance quality control measures.
Furthermore, Network Ten’s staff will undergo additional training to ensure compliance going forward. The network will provide ACMA with a written progress report detailing its improvements and ongoing efforts to maintain adherence to regulations.
ACMA Emphasizes the Importance of Strict Controls
ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood stressed the importance of protecting the public from the potential harm associated with gambling advertising. “Broadcasters must have stringent controls in place to ensure compliance with restrictions on gambling ads during sporting events,” Ms. Lidgerwood stated.
According to current guidelines, motorsport practice and qualifying sessions are subject to the same restrictions on gambling advertising as the main event. A separate investigation in 2024 revealed that 10 Play, Network Ten’s streaming service, also violated online gambling advertising rules during two live-streamed sports events.

ACMA Orders Internet Providers to Block Illegal Gambling Sites

Since November 2019, a total of 1,154 sites have been blocked, with approximately 220 illegal services leaving the Australian market since 2017.
