Former Star Entertainment Group Leaders Appear in Court Over Regulatory Violations
The former leaders of the Australian casino and hospitality giant, Star Entertainment Group, recently appeared in court for a hearing related to past regulatory violations. Failure to Manage Risk
On Monday, ten former heads of the company attended a hearing at the federal court regarding alleged negligence and money laundering facilitation. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) highlighted that the former leaders failed to adequately manage risk at their casinos located across Australia.
ASIC barrister, Ruth Higgins, explained that the case did not involve the risks associated with players wagering money but rather management negligence leading to legal, regulatory, and reputational risks.

As a result of the violations, former Star Entertainment leaders such as ex-CEO Matthias Bekier, former secretary and general counsel Paula Martin, and former chief casino officer Greg Hawkins are facing legal actions. The trio allegedly had knowledge of the risks but failed to inform the board.
Additionally, several board members, including Benjamin Heap, Gerard Bradley, John O’Neill, and others, were accused of overlooking the company’s dealings with Suncity and other junkets. ASIC argued that they were aware of the risks and red flags but took no action.
ASIC is seeking penalties for the former executives and directors, aiming to ban them from managing a corporation for a yet-to-be-determined period.
Financial Struggles
The legal proceedings against former Star Entertainment leaders come at a challenging time for the company. In January, Star Entertainment reported limited debt-raising capacity, leading to a decline in shareholder trust. This limited capacity could impact the drawing of the second tranche under the operator’s new facility.
