Regulators Join Forces to Combat Gambling Addiction in Greece
In an effort to address the growing concerns of excessive gambling and gambling-related harm in Greece, the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) and the Health Quality Assurance Organization (ODIPY) have signed a three-year cooperation agreement to strengthen prevention and treatment efforts.
Greece’s Booming Gambling Market
Greece has seen a rapid growth in its sports betting and iGaming sector, leading to an increase in the number of wagers being placed locally. The adoption of iGaming and sports betting has been on the rise since 2014, with new regulations and a surge in companies entering the market to meet consumer demand.
Addressing Gambling Addiction
While pinpointing the exact number of gambling addicts in Greece remains challenging due to infrequent data updates, a 2014 study suggested that 2.4% of the population is affected by gambling-related issues. The regulators are now focusing on a scientific approach to prevention and treatment, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.
EEEP president Dimitris Dzanatos highlighted the significance of the partnership between the two regulatory bodies in addressing the issue of gambling addiction. He emphasized the need for evidence-based solutions and coordinated efforts to combat the problem effectively.
ODIPY CEO Christos Nestoras echoed Dzanatos’s sentiments, noting that the partnership will allow for a thorough exploration of available evidence to tackle gambling-related harm in the country.
Industry-Wide Efforts
As suppliers and operators in the gambling industry strive to expand their presence in Greece, there has been a shift towards viewing gambling addiction as a preventable issue rather than one that requires treatment. Significant resources are now being allocated to research and prevention strategies to address the root causes of addiction.
By collaborating and leveraging scientific evidence, the EEEP and ODIPY aim to make a significant impact on reducing gambling addiction and promoting responsible gambling practices in Greece over the next three years.
