New Jersey Casinos Report Stable Start to 2025 Despite Drop in Total Gaming Revenue
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) recently released data regarding the performance of Atlantic City’s nine casinos for the month of January. Despite a slight decrease in total gaming revenue, the month was considered stable. The decline was primarily due to a decrease in sports betting, which was partially offset by an increase in casino play and online gaming.
iGaming on the Rise, Sports Wagering Slows Down
According to the DGE report, total gaming revenue for the casinos, racetracks, and their partners in January 2025 amounted to $553.9 million. This figure represented a marginal drop of 0.9% compared to January 2024, which reported $558.7 million in total gaming revenue.
The DGE also noted that this resulted in total gross revenue taxes of $62.1 million for the month.
Casino win for the nine Atlantic City casinos reached $210.1 million in January, marking a 2.6% year-on-year increase. Slot machines contributed $145.4 million to this total, while table games accounted for $64.6 million. In comparison, the city’s casino hotels generated $204.7 million in casino win in January 2024.
On the other hand, iGaming revenue saw a significant increase, consistent with previous trends. The casinos and their partners reported a total internet gaming win of $221.6 million for January 2025, reflecting a growth of 20.9% year-on-year. In January 2024, operators had reported $183.3 million in internet gaming win.
Despite the substantial growth in iGaming, sports betting experienced a notable decrease, with gross revenue falling by 28.4% year-on-year. In January 2025, sports wagering gross revenue amounted to $122.2 million, while in January 2024, it stood at $170.8 million.
For additional context, retail wagering revenue in January 2025 remained relatively stable at $3.65 million (-6.4%), while online wagering revenue saw a significant decline to $118.5 million (-29%).
Borgata Continues to Lead the Pack in Atlantic City
When it comes to the top-performing casinos in Atlantic City, the Borgata retained its position at the top with $60.4 million in revenue for January. The majority of this revenue ($40.1 million) came from slot machines, with the rest coming from table games ($17.8 million) and poker ($2.4 million).
Following closely behind, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino AC secured the second spot with $38 million in revenue, of which $25.6 million came from slots and $13.4 million from table games. Ocean Casino ranked third with $35.2 million in revenue, reporting $21.7 million from slots and $13.4 million from table games.
Harrah’s, Tropicana, and Caesars followed with $17 million, $15 million, and $13.6 million in total gaming win, respectively. Resorts Casino Hotel, Golden Nugget, and Bally’s rounded out the list with $10.7 million, $10.2 million, and $9.7 million in total gaming win, respectively.
