Senator Hontiveros Urges Presidential Action to Ban Online Gambling in the Philippines

POGOs were once a thriving part of the Philippines’ gambling industry, attracting many foreign players. However, concerns about fraud and ties to organized crime led to their ban by President Marcos through Executive Order 74.
Challenges in Enforcement
Despite the government’s efforts to crackdown on POGOs, many operators are still finding ways to continue their operations. While some have been deported and hubs in Manila shut down, others have gone underground or moved to areas with less stringent law enforcement.
Senator Hontiveros highlighted the challenges of dealing with key players who are still at large, leading to concerns about the resurgence of online gambling through illegal means.
Calls for Further Legal Action
Hontiveros stressed the need for additional legal measures to address potential loopholes in President Marcos’ executive order. She warned that POGOs could exploit existing agreements with licensed casinos to continue their activities under the guise of legality.
In addition to the online gambling issue, the government is also warning the public about scams targeting Filipinos with false promises of free vacations that end up trapping them in fraudulent operations in neighboring countries.
PAGCOR’s Rationalization Plan
In a related development, Alejandro Tengco, chair, and CEO of PAGCOR, announced the closure of two underperforming casinos – Casino Filipino Cebu and Casino Filipino Tagum. These closures are part of PAGCOR’s efforts to streamline operations and reduce losses, with plans to redeploy affected employees.
