Thailand is following in Romania’s footsteps by considering measures to limit the amount of money its citizens spend on online gambling each month. Inspired by Romania’s legislative proposal, Thai officials are exploring the possibility of implementing similar restrictions to prevent excessive gambling habits.
New Legislation Proposed to Curb Online Gambling Expenses
The proposed legislation aims to set a monthly limit on online gambling expenses, restricting it to no more than 10% of an individual’s income from the previous month. This initiative is seen as a proactive step to combat gambling addiction and deter excessive spending on online betting platforms and physical casinos.
Under the draft legislation, Thai citizens would be prohibited from spending more than 10% of their previous month’s income on various forms of gambling, including betting, casinos, slots, and other related activities.
Restrictions Based on Income Levels
For example, if a person earns 50,000 Baht ($1,500) in a month, their maximum allowable gambling expenditure for the following month would be capped at 5,000 Baht ($150). Similarly, an individual earning 100,000 Baht ($3,000) would be limited to spending a maximum of 10,000 Baht ($300) on gambling activities.
Monitoring and Enforcement
Financial institutions would play a crucial role in monitoring and enforcing the proposed limits for online gambling transactions. Banks would be responsible for ensuring that individuals do not exceed the mandated spending cap on online gambling activities.
On the other hand, operators of physical gambling venues would be tasked with overseeing compliance with the spending limits set by the government. They would utilize a platform provided by the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) to monitor players’ spending in real-time.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to adhere to the prescribed limits could result in penalties, including fines of up to 1% of turnover for financial institutions and hefty fines ranging from 200,000 Baht ($6,000) to 500,000 Baht ($15,000) for operators of physical gambling venues.
The revenue generated from these fines would be directed towards funding prevention and financial education programs managed by the National Gambling Office in collaboration with ANAF.
Thailand’s Efforts to Regulate Online Gambling
Thailand’s Ministry of Finance has been actively working on a Fiscal Code draft that includes a proposed 40% tax on casino withdrawals to further regulate the gambling industry in the country.
