UK Gambling Commission Embraces OSR Findings on Great Britain Gambling Survey
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has expressed its satisfaction with the outcomes of the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) in connection to the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). In response, the UK’s regulator has committed to implementing fresh initiatives as per the recommendations put forth by the OSR.
The OSR Review of GSGB
The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) was given the task of conducting a thorough examination of the GSGB. The office commended the survey’s transparency, recognizing the effort put into it, and provided certain recommendations to amplify its dependability.
The GSGB is founded on the UKGC’s official statistics regarding gambling behaviors in the country, reflecting the regulator’s dedication to ensuring transparency within the industry. Following years of development, the UKGC sought the OSR’s evaluation of the GSGB against their standards in the Code of Practice for Statistics.
The OSR highlighted the absence of an accredited official statistics status among other aspects. However, they also acknowledged that this does not compromise the quality or reliability of the GSGB, despite some dissenting opinions.
Furthermore, the OSR recognized the UKGC’s efforts to be transparent about both the strengths and limitations of its methodology and statistical approach.
UKGC Adherence to Recommendations
As per the OSR’s advice, communication and user engagement will continue to be pivotal for the ongoing success of the GSGB. Consequently, the UKGC is contemplating the establishment of a new GSGB Statistics User Group, comprising diverse industry stakeholders, to serve as a platform for discussion, feedback, and shared knowledge.
In response to the OSR recommendations, the UKGC has either implemented or is considering various enhancements. The implemented improvements include updating the survey improvement plan with additional details for users, crafting new survey questions to validate GSGB findings against external data sources, and enhancing the accessibility and usability of GSGB outputs.
Moreover, the UKGC is planning future improvements such as comparing datasets from the Health Survey for England and the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, publishing a communications strategy to enhance the sharing of GSGB updates, and continuously enhancing the accessibility and usability of GSGB outputs based on feedback from the GSGB statistics user group.
The UKGC emphasized that they are also working on enhancements in line with suggestions from Professor Sturgis’s independent review.
UKGC’s Gratification with the Review
Ben Haden, the director of research and statistics at the UKGC, expressed his contentment with the OSR review findings, welcoming their recognition of the team’s extensive efforts in developing and executing the largest survey of its kind globally. He also welcomed the OSR’s recommendations, which align closely with the UKGC’s existing ongoing efforts.
Lastly, the second GSGB annual report is scheduled for publication on October 2, 2025.
