Bally’s Corporation Saves Preston High School from Closure
Bally’s Corporation recently made a generous move by agreeing to purchase Preston High School, a Catholic all-girls high school in the Bronx, saving it from the brink of closure. This act of philanthropy comes amidst the company’s ongoing efforts to secure one of the three downstate New York casino licenses.
Bally’s Purchase of Preston High School
On April 22, the Bally’s Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, finalized a deal to acquire Preston High School in Throggs Neck for $8.5 million. The school was facing imminent closure due to financial challenges. The Sisters of the Divine Compassion, the owners of the school, initially turned down Bally’s offer, believing outside help would not be sufficient to sustain the institution.
However, after persuasive efforts from various stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, and officials, the Sisters ultimately accepted Bally’s proposal. As per the agreement, Bally’s Foundation will buy the property and lease it back to the school for a nominal fee of one dollar per year for 25 years with renewal options. Furthermore, Bally’s will also cover up to $1.6 million for repairs and other expenses.
Despite the acquisition, the school will maintain its autonomy and have the right of first refusal if Bally’s Foundation decides to sell the property. The Sisters will establish a new board to ensure the school’s independence.
Relief and Gratitude from Officials and Alumni
Officials and alumni who advocated for the school’s preservation expressed relief and gratitude towards Bally’s for stepping in to save the historic institution. Assembly member Michael Benedetto hailed the deal as a “tremendous victory for the students” and the Throggs Neck community. Borough president Vanessa Gibson viewed the agreement as a testament to the community’s collective efforts.
New York Attorney General Letitia James praised Preston High School as a cornerstone of the community that has educated generations of young women. She commended everyone involved in the campaign to keep the school operational.
Bally’s Chair, Soo Kim, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting local institutions and being a reliable partner in the communities it serves.
Bally’s Ongoing Quest for Casino License
Meanwhile, Bally’s remains focused on securing one of the coveted downstate New York casino licenses. The company aims to establish a casino hotel in the Bronx if selected as a license holder. Bally’s has pledged to contribute $625 million to support local projects and initiatives.
Advocates of the casino hotel project believe it will generate new employment opportunities and stimulate the Bronx’s economy. However, some locals have voiced concerns about potential issues such as increased traffic, crime, and gambling addiction.
Aside from its endeavors in New York, Bally’s Chair Soo Kim also discussed the company’s recent acquisition of Australia’s Star Entertainment Group.
