The Dutch Gaming Authority Cracks Down on Illegal Poker Tournaments in the Netherlands
The Dutch Gaming Authority, known as Kansspelautoriteit or KSA, recently made headlines by announcing their crackdown on several illegal poker tournaments that took place in the final quarter of 2024. This move by the regulator led to the seizure of tens of thousands of euros in cash and the imposition of a substantial financial penalty of EUR 110K on an organizer of these illicit events.
Rooting Out Illegal Poker
The KSA revealed that illegal poker tournaments are often organized by criminals who use legitimate businesses as a front to mask their unlawful activities. Despite the allure of high-stakes games, unlicensed gambling poses various risks for players, including the potential development of gambling addiction. The KSA emphasized that participants in these illegal events lack the protections available in the legal gambling industry.
