Norsk Tipping Faces Severe Penalties for Mishandling Lottery Draws
The Norwegian gambling monopoly, Norsk Tipping, is currently under scrutiny for its mishandling of lottery draws, resulting in severe consequences for the company. Although Norsk Tipping identified the issue in 2024, the company failed to address it properly. Instead, it informed the Norwegian Gambling and Foundation Authority of the error and continued with two additional lottery draws. Atle Hamar, the director of Norway’s Lottery and Foundations Authority, emphasized the seriousness of the error, stating that all draws conducted by Norsk Tipping in recent years have been erroneous, resulting in incorrect winners.
Hamar stressed the importance of Norsk Tipping improving its control over the games it offers to ensure fair play and adherence to regulations.
A Significant Fine Looms
As a consequence of its mishandling of lottery draws, Norsk Tipping faces a potential fine of up to NOK 46 million ($4.41 million), representing around 0.45% of its turnover. The Norwegian gaming monopoly has a three-week window to defend its case before the regulator makes a final decision.
If the fine is imposed, it would be Norsk Tipping’s second penalty in 2025. Earlier in the year, the company was fined for a self-exclusion failure involving its iOS gaming app that prevented players from excluding themselves from gambling, a serious offense according to the regulators.
The incident, dating back to January 16, 2024, resulted in a fine of NOK 36 million ($3.4 million) for Norsk Tipping. Additionally, in 2024, the company was fined NOK 4.5 million ($430K) for a payment error related to the KongKasino game, where an incorrect payout of NOK 25 million was made.
